History and development: The 7.62 cm Pak 36 (r) is a German anti-tank gun that was created as a result of the conversion of the Soviet divisional gun 76 mm model 1936 (F-22). After the invasion of the USSR in 1941, the German armed forces captured a large number of these guns, which were then adapted to German standards. Modifications included changing the chamber, adding a German muzzle brake, and adjusting the recoil mechanism to new parameters.
The gun had a split-tail chassis, a suspension on a transverse leaf spring, and steel wheels with foam-filled tires. It was equipped with a semi-automatic vertical wedge breech and a recoil mechanism consisting of a hydraulic recoil buffer and a hydropneumatic recuperator. The lack of a limber made it impossible to tow by a horse team.
The Pak 36 (r) gun was one of the most powerful anti-tank guns of the Wehrmacht until 1943. Its creation was a response to the need for more effective weapons against new Soviet tanks, such as the T-34 and the heavy KV, which featured thick, sloped armor. Thanks to modifications, the Pak 36 (r) became more effective in combat against these vehicles, which was significant in the early years of the war on the Eastern Front.
