Vallejo Paint Store - model paints for painting figures, models, and dioramas

History of the Vallejo Brand

The Vallejo company was founded in 1965 in New Jersey, United States. In its early years, the company specialized in producing water-based acrylic paints for animated films (cartoons). In 1969, the company moved to Spain; at that time, many important cartoon studios were based in Europe. The special properties and unique formula of Vallejo paints quickly became known, and the product was used by most major studios on the continent.

In 1972, Amadeo Vallejo developed Artist Color acrylic paints, the first acrylic for fine arts produced in Spain and one of the first acrylic colors for artists produced in Europe. During this period, Vallejo also introduced liquid watercolors for graphic design.

In 1981, following suggestions from professors at the University of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Vallejo presented Acrylic Studio - a range of high-quality acrylic colors for fine arts in large packaging (200 ml/6.76 fl oz and 500 ml/16.9 fl oz, the first such presentation in artistic colors in the world) at a reduced and standardized price. With this range, resulting from the most careful selection of durable artistic pigments, avoiding the most expensive colors like cadmiums and cobalts, Vallejo created a line of colors that would become a benchmark for the industry and the beginning of a new period of expansion for Acrylicos Vallejo.

Types of Paints Available from Vallejo Manufacturer

The Vallejo brand has two main product lines: Hobby and Fine Arts. These are respectively product lines for hobbyists and artists. Since our model shop focuses on hobbyists, we will skip the artistic series.

Almost all Vallejo paints are fully water-based paints, allowing for odorless painting of figures and models. However, there is a series of paints based on alcohol solvents - this is Liquid Metal, which, when painted, gives an incredibly realistic finish and high gloss.

Detailed Discussion of Vallejo Paint Series

Model Color

The basic matte model paints from Vallejo, designed for brush painting. Fully water-based paints, they can be diluted with both water and dedicated thinning agents for paints.

A range of 220 products:

  • 192 standard colors

  • 10 metallics

  • 2 transparent colors

  • 16 auxiliary products

All products from the Model Color series, which was refreshed at the beginning of 2024, are sold in 18ml bottles made from recycled PET (r-PET).

The formula that creates Model Color paints provides incredible ease of application, excellent coverage, and a matte finish. The colors dry quickly, forming a uniform and self-leveling layer that respects all details and features of the painted model.

Before painting with Vallejo Model Color paints, it is recommended to apply a primer (with an airbrush or spray).

Model Air

A series of water-based matte acrylic paints from Vallejo, specially developed for use in airbrushes. It contains the most complete selection of military colors used from World War I, through World War II, to the present day. Each color in the Air series is based on Vallejo experts' research on all available military references - so that the final painted model retains the highest possible historical accuracy.

The Vallejo Model Air paint series can be used directly from the bottle or thinned with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner or Flow Improver. Before painting with Vallejo Model Air paints, a primer should be applied, and the Model Air paint itself is best applied in several thin layers. The manufacturer recommends using a compressor pressure in the range of 15-20 PSI. For cleaning the airbrush, it is recommended to use Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner.

These paints can also be applied with a brush.

Game Color

The new Game Color formula represents a new approach to painting Fantasy and Wargame figures.

Developed by our experts along with professional modelers, the new range represents another step in the evolution of miniature painting, offering an intuitive and easy-to-learn painting method for new generations.

The range has been designed according to the BSL (Base, Shadow, Light) figure painting system, based on chromatically compatible groups of three colors, which offers less experienced painters an easy choice of colors (shades) for painting miniatures with appropriate highlights and shadows for each base color.

The new r-PET (recyclable) plastic bottle is completely transparent, improving color visualization and increasing AV's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. In addition to the new bottle, the new cap includes a security seal.

Game Air

Game Air is a range of acrylic colors for airbrushes, specially designed by our experts along with professional modelers for painting all Fantasy, Wargames, and Sci-Fi figures and models. The range was developed for two purposes: to retain the most popular shades and to offer new colors that allow for the use of the BSL (Base, Shadow, and Light) chromatic grouping system.

The Game Air and Game Color ranges are perfectly compatible; the colors are identical in both formulas, allowing for color mixing in both airbrush and brush applications. The new formula increases the load of ultrafine pigment, improves coverage, and provides exceptional adhesion on previously primed plastic, resin, or metal figures and models.

They can be used directly with an airbrush and are fast-drying, offering a self-leveling matte finish. The new r-PET (recycled) plastic bottle is completely transparent, improving color visualization and increasing AV's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. In addition to the new bottle, the new cap includes a security seal.

Xpress Color

When we need to quickly paint many figures, Xpress Color is the ideal choice; these matte colors are specially formulated for quickly and easily painting miniatures.

Their main feature is excellent capillarity, which allows the color to easily spread over the miniature surface, settling on all reliefs and more intensely in the figure's crevices, creating a contrast effect with just one layer of paint.

Are Vallejo paints good for beginner modelers?

Yes! Vallejo paints are among the best model paints on the market. Additionally, since they are water-based paints, they are odorless and should not irritate the respiratory system while painting with a brush. Of course, when airbrushing, it is best to use a protective mask. The wide range of Vallejo acrylic paint colors allows for selecting the right shade for practically any application, whether painting figures, a World War I military vehicle, or a powerful warship.
