Historical background:
The Adelaide class frigates were built in Australia and the United States for the Royal Australian Navy. They were based on the American Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates but were modified according to Australian requirements. The first unit entered service in 1980. A total of six units were built, two of which were later sold to the Chilean Navy.
These frigates were the main air defense units of Australia from the retirement of the Perth class destroyers in 2001 until the introduction of the Hobart class destroyers in 2017. They were armed with Mark 13 missile launchers for SM-2MR missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Additionally, there were two S-70B Seahawk helicopters on board.
The Santa Maria class is the Spanish version of the Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates, built with future upgrades in mind. The first unit, Santa Maria, entered service in 1986. These frigates are equipped with air defense and anti-submarine systems, as well as electronic warfare systems.
