Original aircraft carrier Shandong:

The Shandong aircraft carrier, designated as Type 002, was launched on April 26, 2017, and is the first aircraft carrier built entirely in China. It is the second aircraft carrier in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), following Liaoning, from which its design was developed. Shandong is a modification of the Soviet Kuznetsov-class design, which is reflected in its NATO reporting name "Kuznetsov Mod."

History and construction:

The construction of Shandong began in November 2013 at the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry in Liaoning Province. The official confirmation of the ship's existence by the Chinese government only occurred when construction was already advanced. In 2015, the first images of the hull appeared, and in 2016, key elements such as the flight deck and superstructure were installed.

Sea trials and commissioning:

The first sea trials of Shandong took place in May 2018, and by the end of 2019, nine series of tests were conducted. The aircraft carrier was officially commissioned on December 17, 2019. Compared to its predecessor, Liaoning, Shandong achieved operational readiness much faster, highlighting its significance in China's maritime strategy.

Military operations:

Shandong has participated in numerous military exercises, including simulations of air and naval attacks around Taiwan and in the South China Sea. In 2023, during the United Sharp Sword exercises, the aircraft carrier operated near Okinawa, with its aircraft taking off and landing 120 times within 48 hours. In 2024, Shandong participated in exercises involving a large escort fleet, and in 2025, it took part in the "Strait Thunder 2025A" maneuvers around Taiwan.

Design and equipment:

Shandong measures approximately 305 meters in length and has a displacement of about 55,000 tons. Its design is based on the Liaoning project but includes numerous modifications that enhance the efficiency of air operations. The space for anti-ship missiles has been removed, allowing for an increased hangar size. The angle of the flight deck has been optimized, and the structure of the island has been reduced by 10%, enabling the accommodation of more aircraft and helicopters.
