Description
Plastic model airplane for assembly: Albatros D.Va 1:72 Smer 0878
The Albatros D.V was a German biplane fighter with a wooden structure from the First World War, the front part of the fuselage of which was covered with aluminum sheet. The D.V version was an evolution of the D.III model, from which it mainly differed by the elliptical cross-section of the fuselage, which allowed for a weight reduction of about 50 kg. Changes were also made to the aileron drive.
Despite the lighter construction, the aircraft suffered from technical problems. The sesquiplane structure, inspired by Nieuport aircraft solutions, required a light build, while the inline engines used in Albatroses were relatively heavy. This caused a dangerous tendency for the lower wing to break off when pulling the machine out of a dive – this defect could not be fully eliminated until the end of the war. The D.Va version presented in the model featured a reinforced structure, which, however, involved an increase in the weight of the airframe.
