Model kit depicting a World War II American bomber group airfield. The set includes a model of the Martin B-26 Marauder aircraft and elements of airfield infrastructure and personnel figures.

During World War II, the smallest administrative unit in the USAAC (United States Army Air Corps) was a group consisting of two to four squadrons. Air groups were the equivalent of army regiments and were distinguished by the types of aircraft they used. For example, the 17th, 319th, and 320th Bomb Groups of the USAAF's 12th Air Force in Europe flew the B-26 Marauder. The B-26G model, manufactured by the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Middle River, was the last and most advanced variant of the Marauder line.

These aircraft carried out extensive bombing operations throughout Europe - complex missions that required high skill from their crews. Each B-26 Marauder crew consisted of pilots, a bombardier-navigator, and tail gunners. The bombers operated from various airfields: permanent facilities with hard surfaces and temporary field landing strips built from special perforated steel plates known as Marston Mat. These plates allowed for the creation of a stable surface on soft or unstable ground, and their design enabled water drainage. Airfields of this type were common in Italy and France in 1944-1945.
