History and characteristics of the aircraft:
The Douglas A-26 Invader, redesignated as B-26 from 1948 to 1966, is an American twin-engine light bomber and attack aircraft. It was designed by the Douglas Aircraft Company during World War II and participated in many Cold War conflicts. This aircraft was known for its high speed and ability to carry a significant bomb load, making it an effective tool for ground attacks.
The A-26 Invader was the successor to the A-20 Havoc model and was designed by a team of engineers, including Ed Heinemann. The XA-26 prototype made its first flight on July 10, 1942. During testing, it demonstrated excellent performance and flying characteristics, although some modifications were necessary, such as changes to the engine cowlings and strengthening of the landing gear.
A-26 versions were produced in two main forms: A-26B with a gun nose and A-26C with a glass nose for the navigator-bombardier. The A-26B version could be equipped with various combinations of armament, including .50 caliber machine guns, 20 mm or 37 mm automatic cannons, and even an experimental 75 mm howitzer. The A-26C version was equipped with a Norden sight for precision bombing from medium altitudes.
Participation in the Korean War:
The B-26 Invader played a key role during the Korean War (1950-1953). These aircraft were used from the first to the last days of the conflict, attacking advanced enemy positions, rail lines, and roads. B-26 Invaders from the 3rd Bombardment Group, operating from bases in southern Japan, were among the first USAF aircraft involved in the Korean War. They conducted missions over South Korea on June 27 and 28, and on June 29, 1950, they carried out the first USAF bombing mission over North Korea.
During the Korean War, B-26 Invaders were responsible for the destruction of 38,500 vehicles, 406 locomotives, 3,700 railroad cars, and seven enemy aircraft on the ground. Notably, Captain John S. Walmsley Jr. performed a heroic feat when, after all his aircraft's guns jammed, he illuminated a target with a spotlight, allowing his wingmen to destroy a supply train. Walmsley was shot down and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
