Plastic model kit: AMX-50B France Heavy Tank 1:35 Amusing Hobby 35A049
The AMX-50 was a French prototype heavy tank, the development of which began in the 1940s, shortly after the end of World War II. France, aiming to rebuild its armored forces, decided to create a vehicle that could compete with the best tanks of that time, such as the Soviet IS-3 and the German Tiger II.
The first work on the AMX-50 began in 1945, when the company Ateliers de construction d’Issy-les-Moulineaux presented a tank design that was to be modeled after the Tiger II. Initially armed with a 90-mm Schneider gun, the tank had armor limited to 30 mm, which allowed the vehicle's weight to be kept at 30 tons.
As the design work progressed, the AMX-50 underwent a series of modifications. The armor was increased, raising the weight to 55 tons, and the tank was equipped with a modern oscillating turret. In later stages of development, the tank was rearmed with a 100 mm caliber gun. The first prototype was completed in 1949, and tests were conducted from 1950 to 1952.
In 1953, a third prototype was created, equipped with a powerful 120-mm gun, a new turret, and reinforced armor, which increased the vehicle's weight to 59 tons. The next two units, built in 1955 and 1958, had additionally enlarged armor and a lowered hull. Despite advanced technical solutions, none of the AMX-50 prototypes entered mass production. The main reasons were the high cost and excessive weight of the vehicle, which made it impractical in combat conditions.
