Boeing 737-500 – historical and technical background:

The Boeing 737-500 is one of the variants of the second generation of the 737 series, known as the 737 Classic. It was designed as a modern and direct successor to the 737-200 model. Introduced to the market in 1987 by Southwest Airlines, its first flight took place on June 30, 1989, and the first delivery occurred on February 28, 1990. This aircraft was a response to the needs of airlines looking for more economical solutions for shorter routes with fewer passengers.

The 737-500, although smaller than its predecessor the 737-300, offered significant technological improvements. Equipped with two CFM56-3 engines, it featured 25% greater fuel efficiency compared to older models powered by Pratt and Whitney engines. As a result, despite its smaller capacity, it could operate longer routes more economically.
