Vehicle history: Panzerspahwagen (Funk) P204(f) is the German designation for the French armored car Panhard 178, which was captured and adapted by the Wehrmacht after the occupation of France in 1940. The Panhard 178, also known as AMD-35, was one of the most advanced armored cars of its time, designed for reconnaissance tasks for the French cavalry.
The production of the Panhard 178 began in 1936, and by June 1940, 527 units had been produced. These vehicles were equipped with a rear-mounted engine, four-wheel drive, and a 25 mm anti-tank gun. During the French campaign in 1940, the Panhard 178 gained recognition as one of the best vehicles in its class.
After the defeat of France, about 190 of these vehicles were taken over by the Germans, and French factories continued production for the Wehrmacht. The Germans converted some of them into command vehicles, installing characteristic roof antennas, which allowed for better communication on the battlefield. These modified versions were designated as "Funk" and were used both on the Eastern Front and in occupied France.
Combat use: The Panhard 178 was widely used by French reconnaissance units in 1940. After being taken over by the Germans, these vehicles were used in German reconnaissance units and as armored railcars in armored trains, mainly in the USSR. Due to its versatility, the Panhard 178 served in various roles until the end of World War II.
After the war, these vehicles continued to be used by French forces in the colonies and were also in the possession of Syria and Italy. In Syria, they were operated until 1964.
