History and significance of the aircraft: The Armstrong Whitworth A.W.38 Whitley was a British medium/heavy bomber from the 1930s. It was one of three twin-engine medium-range bombers that entered service with the RAF at the beginning of World War II. The Whitley, alongside the Vickers Wellington and Handley Page Hampden, was developed according to the Ministry of Aviation specification B.3/34 and introduced into service in 1937 as the first of the three medium bombers.
The Whitley played a key role in the RAF's early operations during the war. On the very first night of the war, it dropped leaflets over Germany and subsequently participated in the first bombing raids on German and Italian territories. It was an integral part of the RAF's bombing offensive in the early stages of the war. In 1942, it was replaced by larger, four-engine bombers such as the Avro Lancaster.
This aircraft was also used for maritime reconnaissance, as a glider tug, training, and transport aircraft. Civilian versions were used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation as freighters. The Whitley was the first RAF Bomber Command aircraft to penetrate into Germany and also participated in the first bombing raid on Italy in June 1940.
