Vehicle history: The Austin K2/Y Ambulance was a vehicle that played a crucial role on the battlefields of World War II. Although it was unarmed and unarmored, its significance was invaluable. It served for the rapid and efficient transport of wounded soldiers from the front lines to field medical stations, where they could receive necessary assistance. Thanks to its durability and reliability, the K2/Y was always ready for action, making it one of the most important vehicles on the battlefield.
This vehicle was built on the chassis of the Austin K30 light truck, and its patient compartment was developed in collaboration with the Royal Army Medical Corps, ensuring its high functionality. It could carry four stretchers or ten seated wounded. The rear cabin was typically made of painted canvas on a wooden frame, and the red cross on a white background, visible from afar, was meant to protect the vehicle from fire.
The Austin K2/Y Ambulance was extremely popular among British, Commonwealth, and American soldiers, often referred to as "Katy." Over 13,000 units were built, and about fifty of them have survived to this day, some of which have been restored to a condition close to their original wartime configuration.
