Historical background: The Avia S-199 was the first fighter acquired by the Israeli Air Force and used during the Arab-Israeli War in 1948. This aircraft was built in Czechoslovakia from parts and plans left over from Luftwaffe production. Although the design was based on the proven Bf 109G, the use of the alternative Junkers Jumo 211F engine caused numerous problems, making the aircraft unpopular among pilots. Czechoslovak pilots referred to it as "Mezek" (Mule), while in Israel it was known as "Sakeen" (knife in Hebrew).
The production of the Avia S-199 began in March 1947 and ended in 1949, with about 550 units produced, including training versions CS-199 and C-210. The last units were retired from Czechoslovak service in 1957.
