The Avro Lancaster was the primary heavy four-engine bomber of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. The B Mk.III Dambuster version became famous during Operation Chastise in 1943, when modified aircraft of the 617th Squadron carried out raids on German dams in the Ruhr Valley using Barnes Wallis's bouncing bombs. In turn, the Special Grand Slam versions were adapted to carry the heaviest conventional bombs weighing nearly 10 tons, used to destroy heavily fortified strategic targets, such as submarine pens or railway viaducts.
