About the Bell UH-1Y Venom helicopter:
The Bell UH-1Y Venom is a medium-sized, twin-engine multi-role helicopter with four rotor blades, built by Bell Textron as part of the H-1 modernization program for the United States Marine Corps. This helicopter entered service in 2008, replacing older UH-1N Twin Huey models that had been in use since the 1970s.
History and development:
In 1996, the United States Marine Corps began the H-1 modernization program aimed at upgrading utility and attack helicopters. As part of this program, Bell Helicopter signed a contract to upgrade 100 UH-1N helicopters to the UH-1Y version and 180 AH-1W helicopters to the AH-1Z version.
Initially, it was planned to retrofit existing UH-1N airframes, but it was ultimately decided to produce new helicopters. The first two UH-1Y helicopters were delivered to the Marine Corps in February 2008, and full-scale production began in September 2009. By 2019, 160 units had been delivered to the USMC, and production was resumed in 2021 for an order from the Czech Republic.
The UH-1Y Venom was first used operationally in 2009 as part of the combat element of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. These helicopters were used in Afghanistan, providing air support during Taliban attacks. In 2016, UH-1Ys participated in operations against ISIL in Libya.
