History and design of the Bf 108: The Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun was one of the first aircraft of its size to utilize a fully metal construction with a stressed skin. This aircraft was created in response to an order from the German Ministry of Aviation to participate in the 4th International Aviation Competition in 1934. The Bf 108 was distinguished by innovative solutions, such as automatically extending slots on the leading edge of the wings, which improved its flying characteristics at low speeds.
The first prototype of the Bf 108 made its maiden flight in the spring of 1934, and its serial production began shortly thereafter. The aircraft quickly gained recognition for its reliability, ease of operation, and low operating costs. The Bf 108B version, which appeared a year after the first model, was powered by a larger Argus As 10 engine and introduced a number of design improvements.
Operational history: The Bf 108 gained popularity among both private pilots and military forces. During World War II, it was used by the Luftwaffe as a transport and liaison aircraft. Its excellent flying characteristics and low fuel consumption made it a popular choice for long-distance flights and in aviation competitions. This aircraft participated in many international competitions, achieving high placements, which contributed to the prestige of the German aviation industry.
After the war, the production of the Bf 108 was moved to France, where it continued under the name Nord 1000 Pingouin. Many of these aircraft later appeared in films, often portraying original Bf 108s.
