Messerschmitt Bf 109 – Historical background:

The Messerschmitt Bf 109, designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser, was one of the most important fighters of the Luftwaffe during World War II. This aircraft, alongside the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, formed the backbone of the German fighter forces. The Bf 109 was one of the most technologically advanced fighters of its time, featuring an all-metal construction, an enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear, and a liquid-cooled V12 engine.

The first flight of the Bf 109 took place on May 29, 1935, and it entered operational service in 1937, participating in the Spanish Civil War. During World War II, the Bf 109 was used on almost all European fronts and remained in service until the end of the conflict in 1945. After the war, this aircraft continued to be used by several countries.

The Bf 109 holds the record for the number of units produced – a total of 34,248 were built between 1936 and 1945. Unfortunately, part of the production took place in concentration camps, where forced labor was utilized.

The Bf 109 was the aircraft flown by the three highest-scoring fighter aces of all time, who collectively shot down 928 enemy aircraft, mainly on the Eastern Front. The most famous of them was Erich Hartmann, who achieved 352 victories. Another well-known pilot was Hans-Joachim Marseille, who shot down 158 aircraft during the North African campaign in a relatively short time. The Bf 109 was also used by aces from other countries fighting on the side of Germany, such as Finnish pilot Ilmari Juutilainen, who achieved 58 of his 94 confirmed victories on this aircraft.
