Historical background: The Blackburn Buccaneer is a British strike aircraft designed in the 1950s for the Royal Navy. Its main task was to combat Soviet Sverdlov-class cruisers, which posed a threat to British maritime convoys. The Buccaneer was capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons, and its design allowed for low-level attacks, minimizing the risk of detection by enemy radars.

During the Gulf War in 1991, the Buccaneer played a crucial role in RAF operations. Due to the effectiveness of Iraqi air defense, Tornado and Jaguar strike missions had to be carried out at higher altitudes, reducing their effectiveness. In this situation, the Buccaneer equipped with laser-guided bomb technology known as 'Pave Spike' proved invaluable in delivering precision munitions. In a short time, twelve Buccaneer aircraft were prepared and sent to the Gulf in new desert camouflage, earning the nickname 'Sky Pirates'.

Design features: The Buccaneer was one of the largest aircraft operating from British aircraft carriers. Its design included innovative solutions such as the Boundary Layer Control (BLC) system, which improved aerodynamic properties at low speeds, crucial during takeoffs and landings on aircraft carriers. The aircraft was also equipped with a rotating bomb bay, allowing for quick release of payloads without increasing aerodynamic drag.

Combat use: The Buccaneer was used by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, as well as by the South African Air Force.
