History and significance of the Katyusha:
The Katyusha, also known as BM-13, was the first mass-produced rocket artillery system in the Soviet Union. Its development began in the 1930s, and the first tests were conducted at the end of 1938. This system gained fame due to its ability to deliver rapid and intense bombardments, making it an extremely effective tool on the battlefield. Although less precise than traditional artillery, the Katyusha was easy to produce and could be mounted on various chassis, providing it with mobility and flexibility in use.
During World War II, Katyushas were mounted on ZIS-6 trucks, and later on American Studebaker US6 trucks, which were supplied under the Lend-Lease program. Thanks to its mobility, Katyushas could quickly change positions after firing a salvo, making it difficult for the enemy to locate them.
After the war, the BM-13-16 system was modernized and mounted on a new ZiL-157 chassis, which featured high off-road capabilities. The artillery system consisted of 8 double-sided rail guides that could fire 16 M-13 rockets with a caliber of 132 mm.
