History and achievements of the BMW 328: The BMW 328 is a sports car produced by BMW from 1936 to 1940. Its design is attributed to Peter Szymanowski, who became the chief designer of BMW after World War II, although technically the car was designed by Fritz Fiedler. The 328 model debuted at the Eifelrennen race at the Nurburgring in 1936, where Ernst Henne won in the 2.0-liter class.
This car achieved over 100 victories in its class in 1937, including prestigious races such as the RAC Tourist Trophy, Osterreichische Alpenfahrt, and La Turbie hillclimb. In 1938, the BMW 328 triumphed again in its class at the RAC Tourist Trophy, Alpine Rally, and Mille Miglia. In 1939, this model won the RAC rally and placed fifth in the overall classification and first in its class during the 24-hour Le Mans race.
Production of the BMW 328 ended with the outbreak of World War II in 1940, with a total of 462 units produced. After the war, the factory in Eisenach, where the 328 model was produced, fell into the Soviet occupation zone, which affected the future of car production in this region until the reunification of Germany in 1989.
Influence on Bristol: One interesting aspect of the BMW 328's history is its influence on the British brand Bristol. After the war, the technical plans for the BMW 328 and one of the Mille Miglia units (disguised as a Frazer Nash) were taken from the bombed BMW factory by representatives of the Bristol Aeroplane Company and Frazer Nash. BMW engineer Fritz Fiedler was also persuaded to collaborate. Bristol Cars began producing cars based on BMW's plans, and the first model, the Bristol 400, was heavily inspired by the BMW 328. The Bristol engine was also an option in AC cars before the Cobra model appeared.
