History and use:

The 6 Pdr anti-tank gun, also known as the Ordnance QF 6-pounder, was a British 57 mm caliber gun that played a key role as the main anti-tank gun in both the British and American armies (as the 57 mm gun M1) during World War II. Although designed before the outbreak of the war, it entered service only during the North African campaign in April 1942, replacing earlier 2-pounder guns.

The 6 Pdr gun was mounted on a conventional two-wheeled carriage with split trails, allowing for easy movement and positioning on the battlefield. This was particularly important in the context of airborne operations, where mobility and speed of action were crucial. The airborne version of the gun was a modification of the standard model, with a shorter axle and modified shield, making it easier to transport and operate in difficult conditions.

The 6 Pdr gun was capable of penetrating the armor of German tanks, such as the Tiger I, especially when using more advanced ammunition that became available in 1944. Due to its light weight and ease of handling, it was the preferred choice in many operations, including the famous landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, and the crossing of the Rhine.
