History of HMS Dreadnought: HMS Dreadnought was a Royal Navy battleship whose design revolutionized naval power. Commissioned in 1906, it represented such a significant advancement in naval technology that its name began to be associated with an entire generation of battleships known as dreadnoughts. Vessels that became obsolete due to its introduction were referred to as pre-dreadnoughts.
The father of the Dreadnought is considered to be Admiral Sir John "Jacky" Fisher, First Sea Lord of the Admiralty. Shortly after taking office in 1904, he commissioned the design of a battleship armed exclusively with 12-inch (305 mm) guns and capable of reaching a speed of 21 knots (39 km/h; 24 mph). Fisher convened a Design Committee to evaluate alternative designs and assist with detailed design work.
Dreadnought was the first battleship of its era to have a uniform main battery, instead of several large guns supplemented by heavy secondary artillery of smaller guns. It was also the first dreadnought powered by steam turbines, making it the fastest battleship in the world at the time of its completion.
Historical significance: The introduction of the Dreadnought triggered a naval arms race, as navies around the world, particularly the Imperial German Navy, sought to match it in the period leading up to World War I. Although designed to fight enemy battleships, its only significant action was ramming and sinking the German submarine SM U-29, making it the only battleship to confirm the sinking of a submarine.
Dreadnought did not participate in the Battle of Jutland in 1916, as it was undergoing modernization, nor in any other naval battle during World War I. In July 1916, it was assigned to coastal defense in the English Channel before rejoining the Grand Fleet in 1918. In 1919, the ship was reduced to reserve, and two years later, it was sold for scrap.
