History and technical background:
The FV 214 Conqueror, also known as Tank, Heavy No. 1, 120 mm gun, Conqueror, was a British heavy tank developed after World War II. Its main task was to provide long-range anti-tank support for the Centurion tanks, which were armed with smaller 20-pounder guns. The Conqueror was equipped with a powerful L1 120 mm gun, making it one of the heaviest armed tanks of its time.
The design of the Conqueror began with the A45 program in 1944, aimed at creating a heavy infantry tank. In 1946, the project was renamed FV200, with the goal of creating a universal tank that could perform various combat roles. However, due to rising costs and changing requirements, the project was modified, leading to the creation of the Conqueror.
The Conqueror was known for its exceptionally heavy armor, especially at the front, where the armor thickness could reach up to 680 mm. Despite its weight, the tank had excellent off-road capabilities. One of the most advanced features of its design was the rotating commander’s cupola, which was a key element of the fire control system. It allowed the commander to independently aim and fire, which was a groundbreaking solution at the time.
Between 1956 and 1959, a total of 185 Conqueror tanks were produced, including 20 in the Mark I version and 165 in the Mark II version. These tanks were mainly used by the British Army of the Rhine in Germany, where they served as anti-tank support. Although the Conqueror never saw combat, its design and armament were a significant part of NATO's defensive strategy during the Cold War.
Today, the Conqueror can be seen in several museums around the world, including The Tank Museum in Bovington, the Imperial War Museum Duxford, and the Musee des Blindes in France. Some examples are also part of private collections.
