History and significance:

HMS Vanguard, as the first of the four Vanguard-class submarines, was built at the Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering yard in Barrow-in-Furness. These submarines replaced earlier Resolution-class vessels and play a crucial role in the British nuclear deterrent strategy. Each Vanguard-class submarine is capable of carrying up to 16 Trident II ballistic missiles, which can be equipped with nuclear warheads. Following the 2010 strategic review, the number of missiles on board was reduced to eight, and the number of warheads to 40.

The Vanguard-class submarines are the only platforms carrying nuclear weapons in the UK since the retirement of RAF thermonuclear bombs in 1998. With advanced nuclear propulsion, these submarines can operate for extended periods without the need for refueling, making them extremely efficient and difficult to detect.
