History and significance of the Lockheed C-121A Constellation:

The Constellation project was initiated in 1939 at the request of TWA airlines. The prototype, known by the military designation C-69, made its first flight on January 9, 1943. After World War II, in 1948, the U.S. Air Force signed a contract with Lockheed for the production of ten L-749A aircraft, which were designated C-121A. This version differed from the L-749 by having a reinforced floor for cargo transport and large rear cargo doors.

The C-121A Constellation was used by the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) for logistical operations. These aircraft could be quickly adapted for transporting the wounded, thanks to the ability to swap seats for stretchers. The C-121A played a crucial role during the airlift to Berlin, which aimed to counter the Soviet blockade of the city. This operation lasted from June 1948 to May 1949 and involved transporting supplies from the USA to Europe, and then to West Berlin using smaller aircraft.

In 1950, six of the ten C-121A aircraft were converted into a VIP version known as VC-121A. These aircraft were equipped with particularly comfortable interiors and advanced communication systems. The last C-121A aircraft were retired from service in 1968.
