History of the aircraft: The Heinkel He 111H-20 was one of the most frequently produced bombers of the Luftwaffe, and its transport version was built in 1944 with the factory number 701152. In the last days of World War II in Europe, this aircraft was captured by American forces and transported to Cherbourg. There, pilots from the 56th Fighter Group USAAF adopted it as their own and painted it in the deep purple color characteristic of their unit.

In September 1945, when the time came to return to the USA, American pilots faced the dilemma of leaving the aircraft in Europe. Not wanting to abandon it, they made the bold decision to fly to the British airbase North Weald, despite the lack of approval from higher command. The next morning, surprised British pilots discovered the German aircraft at their airfield. Thanks to this daring action, the aircraft was preserved and later displayed at the German airshow in RAE Farnborough. Ultimately, in 1978, it found its permanent place in the Royal Air Force Museum in London, where it can be admired to this day.
