History and use of the Casa C-295M aircraft:
The Airbus C295, previously known as CASA C-295, is a medium tactical transport aircraft designed and initially produced by the Spanish aerospace company CASA, which is now part of the European consortium Airbus Defence and Space. Work on the C-295 aircraft began in the 1990s as an extension of the successful CASA/IPTN CN-235 transport aircraft. The C-295 prototype made its first flight on November 28, 1997, and serial production began shortly thereafter.
The Spanish Air Force was the first customer, ordering nine C-295 aircraft in military configuration in April 1999. Two years later, the aircraft was officially introduced into service. Soon after, additional orders for the C-295 followed. After CASA was incorporated into the pan-European aerospace group EADS in 2000, the aircraft was renamed EADS CASA C-295. In 2015, EADS changed its name to Airbus.
The production and final assembly of the C-295 typically take place at the Airbus Defence and Space facilities at San Pablo Airport in Seville, Spain. Additional production agreements have been made with some customers. Since 2011, the Indonesian company Indonesian Aerospace has been producing the CN-295 under license as part of an industrial cooperation with Airbus Defence & Space. In 2021, it was agreed that a batch of 40 C-295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force would be produced under license in India by Tata Advanced Systems.
The C-295 is a versatile aircraft capable of performing a variety of missions, such as parachute and cargo drops, electronic intelligence (ELINT), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and maritime patrol. Equipment for adapting the aircraft to different roles is mounted on pallets, allowing for quick assembly and disassembly. Despite obtaining civil certification, the commercial version of the C-295 was not initially developed due to the lack of sales of the CN-235 in the civil aviation segment. It was not until 2017, more than a decade after the military C-295 was introduced into regular service, that the first contract for the civil version of this aircraft was finalized.
The C-295 has been acquired by many countries, including India, Spain, Egypt, Poland, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, Ireland, and others. In Poland, these aircraft play a key role in transport operations, supporting both domestic and international missions.
