The ZTZ-99A tank, an evolution of the earlier Type 98 and Type 99 models, is a key element of the modern maneuver capabilities of the Chinese armed forces. Its development began in 1989, and it entered service in the PLA in 2001. The ZTZ-99A is based on the chassis of the Soviet T-72 but has been significantly upgraded to meet contemporary battlefield requirements.
