The ZTZ-99, also known as Type 99, is a Chinese third-generation main battle tank that replaced older Type 88 models introduced in the late 1980s. This tank is the first mass-produced Chinese third-generation tank that combines advanced technologies such as modular composite armor and ERA reactive armor.

History and development:

The development of the Chinese third-generation tank began in 1989 as part of China's eighth five-year plan. In the 1990s, China developed a prototype of the second generation, the Type 90-II series, based on the chassis of the Soviet T-72 but with Chinese subsystems. Although the Type 90-II did not enter service with the People's Liberation Army, it was successful as an export tank and was produced under license in Pakistan as the Al-Khalid.

The Type 98, also known as WZ-123, was the Chinese version of the Type 90-II, based on the T-72 chassis. It was first showcased during trials before the National Day parade in 1999 and was officially revealed on October 1, 1999. An improved version, named Type 98G or Type 99, was introduced into service in 2001.

In 2015, during the Victory Parade, the updated Type 99A model was officially presented, which had previously been used by Chinese troops during military exercises of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2014.

Deployment and distribution:

By 2008, about 200 Type 98 and Type 99 tanks could have been deployed in the military regions of Beijing and Shenyang. Due to costs, the Type 99 was less widespread than other tanks in service with the PLA. By 2024, over 1300 units of Type 99 and Type 99A had been deployed in service with the People's Liberation Army, forming the backbone of the maneuvering forces of the PLA's heavy armored brigades.
