History and use of the CMV-22B Osprey: The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American multi-role transport aircraft with tiltrotors that combines vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities. Designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed capabilities of a turboprop airplane. The V-22 is operated by the United States and Japan, and its unique design represents a new type of aircraft that entered service in the 2000s.
The origins of the project date back to the 1980s when the failed Eagle Claw operation during the Iran hostage crisis in 1980 highlighted the need for a new type of transport aircraft. In 1981, the U.S. Department of Defense initiated the JVX program aimed at developing an innovative long-range transport aircraft with high speed and vertical takeoff capability. In 1983, the partnership of Bell Helicopter and Boeing Helicopters received a contract to develop the V-22 aircraft.
The first flight of the V-22 took place in 1989, and after years of testing and modifications, in 2007 the aircraft entered service with the United States Marine Corps, replacing the Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knights. In 2009, the U.S. Air Force introduced its version of the tiltrotor, the CV-22B. Since entering service, the Osprey has been used in transport and medical operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Kuwait. In 2021, the U.S. Navy began using the CMV-22B for carrier onboard delivery missions.
