History of the Curtiss P-36 Hawk:

The Curtiss P-36 Hawk, also known as the Curtiss Hawk Model 75, is an American fighter designed and built in the 1930s and 1940s. It was one of the first fighters of the new generation, characterized by a sleek monoplane design with retractable landing gear and a wide use of metal in its construction. Although the P-36 did not play a significant role in the combat operations of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, it was widely used by other countries.

Use in various countries:

  • France: The P-36 was the most commonly used fighter by the French Air Force during the Battle of France. The French H75 achieved 230 confirmed aerial victories, accounting for nearly one-third of all victories by French fighters during this period.

  • Finland: After the fall of France and Norway, several P-36s were captured by the Germans and transferred to Finland. The Finnish Air Force successfully used these aircraft against the Soviet Union, achieving 190⅓ kills.

  • Great Britain and India: The RAF used the P-36, known as Mohawk, in India and Burma. These aircraft were primarily used for bomber escort and ground attack missions.

  • Dutch East Indies: Aircraft ordered by the Netherlands were redirected to the Dutch East Indies, where they participated in battles against Japanese forces.

  • United States: The P-36s were mainly used for training and in overseas units. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, five P-36s managed to take off and shoot down two Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero fighters.

Interesting facts:

  • The P-36 was the predecessor of the more famous Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.
  • The aircraft was produced under license in China and India.
  • In Finland, the P-36 was known as "Sussu" (Darling) and was very popular among pilots.
