History of USS Nimitz:

The USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is an aircraft carrier belonging to the United States Navy, being the first ship of the Nimitz class. This ship was named in honor of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was the commander of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. It is the only Nimitz-class aircraft carrier whose official name is solely the surname of the person it is named after.

The USS Nimitz was launched and commissioned as CVAN-68, which meant "attack aircraft carrier, nuclear-powered." However, on June 30, 1975, as part of a broad fleet transformation, it was redesignated as CVN-68, meaning "multi-role aircraft carrier, nuclear-powered."

Initially, the USS Nimitz was based at Naval Station Norfolk, but in 1987 it was transferred to Naval Station Bremerton in Washington State. After undergoing a Refueling and Complex Overhaul in 2001, its home port was changed to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego County, California. In 2012, the home port of Nimitz was again changed to Naval Station Everett in Washington State. In January 2015, Nimitz returned to Naval Base Kitsap.

After the deactivation of USS Enterprise in 2012 and its retirement from service in 2017, the USS Nimitz became the oldest aircraft carrier in service in the United States and the oldest aircraft carrier in the world in active service.

Nimitz-class aircraft carriers have an expected lifespan of about 50 years. In April 2022, the estimated retirement dates for the USS Nimitz were updated, indicating that "USS Nimitz (CVN 68) was planned to be removed from the combat forces in fiscal year 2025, when the Ship Terminal Off-load Program (STOP) will begin, with deactivation scheduled for 2027."

In March 2025, the Navy announced that the USS Nimitz would undertake its final mission and then arrive at its new home port at Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia no later than April 12, 2026. At that point, a year-long STOP process will begin, after which the ship will be transferred to Newport News Shipbuilding for defueling and deactivation.
