Plastic model aircraft kit: de Havilland Vampire FB.5/FB.9 1:48 Airfix 06108
The de Havilland DH.100 Vampire is a British jet-powered fighter aircraft that went down in history as the second design of this type to enter service with the Royal Air Force, right after the Gloster Meteor. Although work on the prototype began in 1943 as an experimental project, the machine proved successful enough to enter mass production, reaching operational readiness in 1946. The Vampire was a pioneer in many fields – it was the first RAF fighter to exceed 800 km/h in level flight, the first jet in the history of the Royal Navy to land on an aircraft carrier, and also the first jet aircraft to cross the Atlantic (with stopovers).
The FB.5 version was the most numerous fighter-bomber variant produced, while the FB.9 version was adapted for operations in hot climates by equipping the cockpit with an air conditioning system. Nearly 3,300 units were produced in total, serving in the RAF and the air forces of over 30 other countries.
