History and development of Dornier Do 215: Dornier Do 215 was an extension of the earlier model Do 17, known as the "Flying Pencil" due to its slender fuselage. Initially designed as a fast bomber, the Do 215 quickly found use as a reconnaissance aircraft, and later as a night fighter. Production began in 1939, and the aircraft were originally intended for export, but most of them ended up with the Luftwaffe. The Do 215B-5 was a version of the night fighter, equipped with FuG 202 Lichtenstein radars and powerful armament. These aircraft were used by the night fighter unit 11./NJG 1 until early 1944. A total of 105 examples of the Do 215 were produced in various versions, including B-5, at the Dornier factory in Oberpfaffenhofen.
The Do 215 was used by a special reconnaissance unit of the Luftwaffe, Aufklärungsgruppe des Oberbefelshabers der Luftwaffe, for strategic and reconnaissance missions. These aircraft, often in civilian markings, carried out missions over countries with which Germany was not yet at war, as well as long-range missions behind enemy lines. In the later stages of the war, the Do 215 served as a night fighter, and the last examples were retired from service by the end of 1944.
