History and significance of ROKS Dokdo:
ROKS Dokdo (LPH-6111) was launched on July 12, 2005, at the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Constructions Co. shipyard in Busan. It is the first ship of the Dokdo class, which served as the flagship of the Republic of Korea Navy's 5th Component Flotilla until the commissioning of ROKS Marado in 2018. Before ROKS Dokdo, this title belonged to the 9,000-ton logistics support ship ROKS Cheonji, which served as a replenishment at sea (UNREP) unit.
ROKS Dokdo is one of the most modern amphibious ships in the East Asian region. Its main task is to transport and land armed forces, as well as to support humanitarian and rescue operations. The ship is equipped with modern navigation and communication systems, making it a key operational element in South Korea's maritime activities.
Specifications of the actual ship:
- Length: 199 meters
- Width: 31 meters
- Displacement: 18,800 tons
- Maximum speed: 23 knots
- Crew: approximately 300 people
- Transport capacity: up to 720 soldiers, 10 tanks, 7 helicopters
ROKS Dokdo is also adapted to serve as a command ship, enabling the coordination of complex maritime operations. Its design allows for quick and efficient execution of amphibious operations, which is crucial in wartime actions and rescue missions.
