Description
Plastic model aircraft kit: Dornier Do 17Z-2 1:72 ICM 72304
The Dornier Do 17, due to its characteristic, very slender fuselage, earned the nickname "Fliegender Bleistift" (Flying Pencil). Designed in the mid-1930s by Dornier Flugzeugwerke, it was initially intended to serve as a fast passenger and mail aircraft for Lufthansa, but its military potential was quickly recognized by the nascent Luftwaffe.
The Do 17Z version was the most widely produced variant of this aircraft. The Z-2 model was equipped with a new "Waffenkopf" nose section and air-cooled Bramo 323 Fafnir engines. These aircraft formed the backbone of the German bomber force in the initial phase of World War II, taking part in the September Campaign, the fighting in France, and the Battle of Britain. Over time, due to increasing losses and the emergence of more modern designs such as the Junkers Ju 88, the Do 17s were relegated to auxiliary roles, including towing assault gliders.
