Description
Plastic model airplane for assembly: Dornier Do 217K-2 with Fritz-X glide bombs 1:48 ICM 48275
The Dornier Do 217K-2 was a specialized variant of the German bomber, developed to carry guided glide bombs Ruhrstahl SD 1400 X, commonly known as Fritz-X. The most characteristic feature of this version was the significantly increased wingspan, measuring nearly 25 meters, which was necessary to lift the heavy armament - a single Fritz-X bomb weighed as much as 1570 kg. The aircraft was equipped with two special underwing pylons and an additional fuel tank with a capacity of 1160 liters in the front bomb bay to compensate for the increased drag and weight.
The Fritz-X bomb, designed by engineer Max Kramer, was one of the world's first precision guided munitions. Intended for destroying heavily armored naval targets, it was radio-controlled from the aircraft. The most famous combat success of this machine was the sinking of the Italian battleship Roma on September 9, 1943, by the unit III./KG 100 under the command of Major Bernhard Jope.
