History and background: The Dornier Do 217 was a multi-role bomber of the Luftwaffe, which replaced the earlier Do 17 model, known as the "flying pencil." Production of the Do 217 began in late 1940, and the aircraft entered service in early 1941. The Do 217N-1 version was specially adapted for night operations, equipped with DB 603A engines, powerful armament, and radar.

Between 1942 and 1943, a total of 364 Dornier 217 night fighters were produced in various modifications. These aircraft were used by several night fighter squadrons and played a significant role in the defense of the Reich campaign.
