Description
Plastic model kit: Drakkar Viking Ship 1:60 Smer 0902
The drakkar was the largest type of ship used by the Vikings, classified as longships. These vessels represented the pinnacle of Scandinavian shipbuilding, combining the features of an ocean-going ship with a river boat. Thanks to their shallow draft, drakkars could operate freely not only on the waters of the North or Baltic Seas but also venture deep up European rivers, such as the Seine or Volga, which made them an extremely effective tool during raiding and trading expeditions.
The construction of the drakkar was based on clinker planking, and the slender hulls, with a width-to-length ratio often reaching 7:1, allowed for impressive speeds of 13-15 knots. A characteristic element, from which the vessel's name derives, was the sculpture of a dragon's head placed on the stempost. It was intended to frighten away the guardian deities of the attacked settlements and cities.
