The pre-war period in US naval aviation was characterized by colorful aircraft paint schemes, where section colors (tails, fuselage stripes, engine cowlings) allowed for quick identification of an aircraft's affiliation with a specific unit and aircraft carrier, such as USS Langley (CV-1). USS Langley was the first aircraft carrier of the US Navy, converted from the collier USS Jupiter. It served as a key test platform for the development of operational tactics for carrier aviation in the Pacific before the outbreak of World War II.
