History and achievements of the EF-111A Raven: The EF-111A Raven, also known as "Spark-Vark," is an electronic warfare aircraft developed by General Dynamics and Grumman. Its development began in the 1970s to replace older models EB-66 and EB-57. This aircraft was unique due to its capabilities in electronic jamming and electronic countermeasures (ECM), making it invaluable in military operations.
The first flight of the EF-111 prototype took place on March 10, 1977, and it achieved full operational readiness six years later. The last unit was delivered in 1985. During its 15 years of service, the EF-111A Raven participated in many key military operations, such as Operation El Dorado Canyon in Libya in 1986, Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989, and Operation Desert Storm in Iraq in 1991.
The aircraft was retired from service in May 1998 due to military force reductions following the end of the Cold War. Initially, the retired aircraft were stored at the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona. Most of them were later scrapped, but four units were put on static display.
