Historical description of the vehicle:
The Elefant, originally known as Ferdinand, was a heavy tank destroyer designed based on the chassis of a prototype Tiger tank that was not accepted for production, created by Ferdinand Porsche. In 1943, 91 units of this vehicle were built, which initially bore the name Ferdinand, and after modifications in 1944 were renamed Elefant.
This vehicle was armed with a powerful 88 mm PaK 43/2 L/71 gun, which was capable of penetrating the armor of any Allied tank from a distance of up to 1.5 km. The Elefant also featured extremely thick armor, with 200 mm at the front, making it practically impervious to most Allied artillery.
The Ferdinands were first used in the Battle of Kursk, where they destroyed 320 Russian tanks. Despite their effectiveness in combat, these vehicles had many flaws, such as an unreliable engine, a delicate transmission system, and a lack of anti-infantry weapons. After the Battle of Kursk, the surviving Ferdinands were sent to Germany, where they underwent modifications, including the addition of a machine gun and extra armor. Elefants served on the Eastern Front and in Italy, and by the end of the war, they were used in the defense of Germany. Despite their shortcomings, under the right tactical conditions, they were a difficult opponent to defeat.
To this day, only two examples of this vehicle have survived. One is located in the Tank Museum in Kubinka, Russia, and the other in the United States Army Ordnance Museum in the USA.
