History and specifications of the original ship: The E 52 type escort ships were designed in response to the armament configuration issues of earlier E 50 type vessels, such as "Le Corse". The new units adopted a reversed armament configuration while retaining the same elements, including:
- Three twin turrets with 57 mm/60 ACAD guns model 1951
- Two Oerlikon 20 mm guns
- Four triple torpedo launchers 550 mm
- Six-fold Bofors Mle 54 375 mm rocket launcher
The torpedo launchers were placed on the main deck behind the funnel, and the rocket launcher was positioned in front of the twin 57 mm turret at the front. A modern DRBV 22A radar was also used, replacing the older DRBV 20A model.
Technical data of the original ship:
- Overall length: 99.80 m
- Maximum width: 10.30 m
- Draft: 4.10 m (at full load)
- Power: 20,000 HP
- Maximum speed: 27 knots
- Crew: 13 officers, 185 non-commissioned officers and sailors
These units were ordered in 1952 and were financed from "off-shore" funds, similar to other units according to US Navy nomenclature. Among them were ships such as F 765 Le Normand, F 768 Le Lorrain, F 766 Le Picard, F 767 Le Gascon, F 770 Le Champenois, F 771 Le Savoyard, and F 769 Le Bourguignon. Four additional units, F 772 Le Breton, F 773 Le Basque, F 774 L Agenais, and F 775 Le Bearnais, were financed from national funds.
In 1967, some of these units, such as F 771 Le Savoyard and F 773 Le Basque, were assigned to the "Landes Test Center" (CEL), where their rear 57 mm turrets were replaced by technical rooms and telemetry reception equipment.
