History and significance of the F-101 Voodoo:
The F-101 Voodoo was developed in the late 1940s as a long-range escort fighter for the Strategic Air Command (SAC) of the United States Air Force. Its design evolved to fulfill various roles, including as a nuclear-armed fighter-bomber for the Tactical Air Command (TAC) and as a reconnaissance aircraft. The first flight of the F-101 took place on September 29, 1954, and in 1957 it set a speed record for jet aircraft, reaching 1,207.6 miles per hour (1,943.4 km/h).
The F-101B Voodoo, an interceptor version, entered service in 1959 with the USAF Air Defense Command and in 1961 with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). This aircraft was a key element of air defense, and its design included a large radar in the nose, an additional crew member to operate it, and an innovative weapons bay with rotating doors, accommodating AIM-4 Falcon missiles or AIR-2 Genie rockets.
The F-101 Voodoo played a significant role during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War, particularly in the reconnaissance version RF-101. These aircraft were used until 1982 by the USAF Air National Guard and in Canada until 1984, before being replaced by the CF-18 Hornet.
