Original F-104 Starfighter: The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American single-engine interceptor that gained fame as one of the fastest aircraft of its time. Designed as a day fighter, it was transformed into a multirole aircraft for operations in all weather conditions in the early 1960s. It was widely used as a fighter-bomber during the Cold War. The F-104 Starfighter was the first production aircraft to achieve a speed of Mach 2. It set world records for speed, altitude, and rate of climb in 1958, becoming the first aircraft to simultaneously hold all three records. It was the first aircraft equipped with the M61 Vulcan cannon.
Service in the Luftwaffe: In 1958, West Germany selected the F-104 as its main fighter. However, the introduction of this technologically advanced aircraft into the newly reformed air force encountered many problems. A high number of accidents, including the loss of 292 out of 916 aircraft and 116 pilots, contributed to its nickname "Witwenmacher" (widow maker).
