Original Lockheed F-104 Starfighter:
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American single-engine, supersonic interceptor that became one of the most recognizable aircraft in the "Century Series" for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as a day fighter, it was transformed in the 1960s into a multirole aircraft capable of operating in all weather conditions and widely used as a fighter-bomber during the Cold War.
The F-104 Starfighter was used by fifteen NATO and allied air forces, often longer than by the USAF. In October 1958, West Germany selected the F-104 as its primary fighter, soon joined by Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, and Italy. European countries formed a production consortium, which was the largest international production program in history up to that point.
The Starfighter was the first production aircraft to achieve a speed of Mach 2 and an altitude of 100,000 feet (30,000 m) under its own power. In 1958, it set world records for speed, altitude, and rate of climb, becoming the first aircraft to simultaneously hold all three records.
Despite its achievements, the Starfighter had a poor safety reputation, especially in Luftwaffe service, where it earned the nickname "Witwenmacher" ("widow maker") due to numerous accidents.
