About the F-22 Raptor: The F-22 Raptor is an American multirole fighter designed as part of the United States Air Force's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program. It is a twin-engine, jet combat aircraft with stealth capabilities, capable of operating in all weather conditions. Its primary mission is to ensure air superiority, but it also has capabilities for ground attacks, electronic warfare, and signal intelligence.
The F-22 was first flown in 1997 and entered service in December 2005 as the F-22A, replacing the F-15 Eagle in most USAF squadrons. Although the initial plan was to purchase 750 units, a total of 195 aircraft were produced, of which 187 are operational models. The reduction of the program was due to high costs, a lack of air threats during production, and the development of the more economical F-35 Lightning II.
The F-22 is a key element of the USAF's tactical air power, being the leading platform for air combat against peer adversaries. Despite initial operational difficulties, this aircraft has become the primary tool of the USAF in missions against the Islamic State and forces allied with Assad in the Middle East. The F-22 will remain a cornerstone of the USAF fighter fleet until it is replaced by the Boeing F-47.
