The F-4 Phantom II was one of the most important combat aircraft used by the armed forces of Great Britain. It was ordered by Great Britain in the 1960s, at a time when the country was facing political and economic problems that affected the development of domestic aviation projects. The Phantom was purchased to fulfill several roles in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, including air defense, close support, low-level attack, and tactical reconnaissance.

British Phantoms were produced as a special batch containing British technology, aimed at supporting the British aerospace industry after several large projects were canceled. Two variants were initially built for Great Britain: the F-4K, designed as an interceptor for operations from Royal Navy aircraft carriers, and the F-4M, used by the RAF in strike and reconnaissance roles.

The F-4K Phantom FG.1 entered service with the Royal Navy in 1968 and with the Royal Air Force in 1969. In the Royal Navy, it was mainly intended for fleet defense, with additional strike roles, both conventional and nuclear.
