History and significance of the F-4K Phantom FG.1:
The F-4 Phantom II was one of the most important combat aircraft used by the armed forces of Great Britain. It was ordered by Great Britain in the 1960s, at a time when the country was facing political and economic problems that affected the development of domestic aviation projects. The Phantom was purchased to fulfill several roles in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, including air defense, close support, low-level attack, and tactical reconnaissance.
British Phantoms were produced as a special batch containing British technology, aimed at supporting the British aerospace industry after several large projects were canceled. Two variants were initially built for Great Britain: the F-4K, designed as an interceptor for operations from Royal Navy aircraft carriers, and the F-4M, used by the RAF in strike and reconnaissance roles.
The F-4K Phantom FG.1 entered service with the Royal Navy in 1968 and with the Royal Air Force in 1969. In the Royal Navy, it was mainly intended for fleet defense, with additional strike roles, both conventional and nuclear. In the RAF, it initially replaced other aircraft in strike, close support, and reconnaissance tasks, and was later transitioned to air defense missions. By the mid-1970s, the Phantom had become the main interceptor for Great Britain and served in this role until 1992, when it was retired as part of defense cuts following the end of the Cold War.
Distinctive features:
- The F-4K Phantom FG.1 was equipped with larger and more powerful Rolls-Royce Spey engines, which replaced the original General Electric J79 turbojet engines, allowing operations from smaller Royal Navy aircraft carriers.
- Design changes included a redesign of the rear fuselage to accommodate the larger engines.
- The Westinghouse AN/AWG-10 fire control system was produced under license by Ferranti.
- About half of the structure and equipment of British Phantoms was produced by British manufacturers, and all components were then shipped to St. Louis for assembly by McDonnell.
Kit for self-assembly and painting. Does not include paints or glue. For assembly, separately sold modeling tools are needed (including cutters, files, tweezers), paints, brushes, and plastic model glue (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement). The photo shows a professionally assembled and painted model.
