History and background of the F-5E Tiger II:
The Northrop F-5 is a family of supersonic light fighters that were designed as a privately funded project by Northrop Corporation in the late 1950s. We distinguish two main models: the original F-5A and F-5B Freedom Fighter variants and the significantly updated F-5E and F-5F Tiger II variants. The F-5E Tiger II, introduced in 1972, was the second generation of this fighter, offering more powerful engines, greater fuel capacity, larger wing area, and improved avionics.
The F-5E Tiger II was widely used by American allies and served in various roles, both in air and ground missions. This aircraft was heavily utilized during the Vietnam War. A total of 1400 Tiger II units were produced before production ended in 1987.
F-5E in the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF):
The Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) received its first batch of F-5A and F-5B aircraft as part of the U.S. military aid program in 1965. In the 1970s, ROCAF began local production of the F-5E, becoming one of the largest operators of this type of aircraft. At its peak, ROCAF had 336 F-5E/F in its arsenal. Over time, with the introduction of more modern fighters such as the F-16, Mirage 2000-5, and F-CK-1, the F-5E/F became secondary fighters in ROCAF service. In 2023, all F-5E were retired from service, and the remaining F-5F and RF-5E Tigergazer are expected to be retired by 2025.
